The Kannavam Forest is not just a leafy paradise but an eloquent reminder of the historic battles waged by Pazhassi Raja against the Britishers. The forest belonged to Kannavath Sankaran Nambiar, one of the principal supporters of Pazhassi Raja. In 1801 CE, Kannavath Nambiar and his son along with other revolutionaries were captured at Kuttiadi, and forcibly marched to a hill near their residence at Kannavam to be hanged in public view.  The Kannavam forest was the arena of many a guerrilla battle, and witness to several tales of brutal torture.

Another feature to be noted are the temples in the forest range, each unique in its way, protected and preserved by the tribal communities. Kannavam is a rare place to explore, and it unveils treasures as you go on a forest trail as well as a heritage trail.
